BUSINESSES WARNED TO PROTECT RIGHTS FOLLOWING FACEBOOK LAWSUIT
A Birmingham-based solicitor is urging businesses in the Midlands to learn lessons from of a major law-suit for social networking site, Facebook, and check protection of their intellectual property. The highly successful website, which already has some 39 million users, is being sued amid claims that its founder stole ideas from rival ConnectU. Mark Zuckerberg is being accused of copyright infringement, fraud and stealing trade secrets.

Make sure your IP is in order
A survey in April this year from the UK Intellectual Property Office, the new name for the Patent office, revealed that businesses risk missing out on valuable income from new technology or ideas because they’re not certain about their intellectual property rights. The survey revealed that most companies do not actively manage IP and only respond passively to IP issues. SMEs were highlighted as an area of particular concern.

New Regs spell out improved health and safety for construction projects
Construction projects in the Midlands will have to adhere to new health and safety requirements under the new CDM 2007 Regulation, which came into force on 6 April. A Birmingham based solicitor, The Wilkes Partnership, is concerned that, although the enforcement of the new CDM regulations has been a long time in the planning, developers, contractors and clients working throughout the region may be ill-prepared.
